Air carriers now compete with travel agents for you to book flights, car rentals, hotels, and entire vacation packages directly with them. Even if they do not undercut the travel agent fares (and they may), they will offer other advantages such as baggage allowances and reduced fees when making changes.
If you cannot fly direct, the online travel agents such as Expedia, Kayak, Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. provide instant information for connections with single and multiple airlines, with side-by-side price comparisons that would otherwise take hours to research. Enter data once and your bookings are done, including car rentals and hotels if you wish.
However, online travel agents only show airlines (and other services) they are contracted with. Those contracts get disrupted if there is a falling out. Therefore, when considering an online travel agent, you may also wish to cross check which air carriers serve the airports on your journey in case there are additional options to consider. For example, Southwest Airlines has great airfares, destinations, baggage and pet policies but only book direct. That could change someday, too, you will have to check!
